Rich Gervais has been a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society for 29 years and has sung in many quartets over the years, competing at both the division and district level. He was appointed as the interim director of the Racing City Chorus in January 2010 and was appointed as the frontline director in August 2010.
Rich has been active in the singing community of the Capital District and Plattsburgh, NY since he was 5 years old, and has participated in many types of choral music as well as performing as a soloist for several local churches, schools, and community groups. He has performed with school choral groups from the North and South Colonie, Niskayuna, and Saratoga Springs school districts as well as the College of St. Rose and SUNY Plattsburgh. He has been a member of church and synagogue choirs in both the Capital District area and Plattsburgh, and often performed as a soloist.
He received formal vocal training as a student at SUNY Plattsburgh, and as a private vocal student studying with Gary Aldrich, a prominent opera singer from the Albany, NY area. His musical performing experiences include classical, opera, light opera, Broadway musical, pop and barbershop.
Rich’s directing experience includes front line directing with the Albany Chapter of SPEBSQSA and assistant director of both the Schenectady and Saratoga Springs Chapters of the Barbershop Harmony Society as well as the Troy Children’s Chorus. He was the Director of Music for the St. Francis DeSales parish in Colonie, NY for 12 years and fulfilled the role of Choir Director and soloist for all parish services. He was also the assistant director of the Siena College Pep Band for three years and is known for his rendition of the National Anthem which he has sung for many Siena home games and several MAAC tournaments at the Knickerbocker/Pepsi arena in Albany NY, and he has sung the anthem in front of as many as 15,000 attendees.
Rich has had extensive experience in local, regional, and professional theater as a cast member (performing both singing and dancing roles) and as a leading actor in many musicals, operas, operettas and cabaret shows. He has appeared in productions of Don Giovanni, Man of LaMancha, Oklahoma, Music Man, Camelot, Carnival, Cabaret, Lil Abner, and The Boyfriend, to name a few.
Rich’s family has always had music as part their family activities, including enjoying the many symphony orchestra concerts and theatrical performances that his wife, Elaine, a violinist, has participated in throughout their 45 years. In fact, music was an integral reason for them meeting each other in Montreal in 1967. The rest is history.
